Biography

Yi Wang is an Associate Professor focused on sustainable vegetable production and precision agriculture. She aims to develop a science-based applied research program that collaborates with vegetable growers and processors to enhance resource use efficiency and the sustainability of vegetable cropping systems in Wisconsin. Her major research areas include making production recommendations regarding variety selection, planting population, irrigation, fertilization, and storage management for potatoes and vegetable crops. She is also developing cloud-based machine learning tools to predict crop yield, quality, water status, and nitrogen status using in-season remote sensing imagery. Furthermore, Yi investigates innovative technologies and practices that improve resource use sustainability in vegetable cropping systems, particularly for potatoes, snap beans, sweet corn, peas, and dry edible beans. She identifies strategic practices to build resilience in vegetable production systems amid changing climate challenges. Yi holds a B.S. in Biological Science from Nanjing Agricultural University in China and a Ph.D. in Potato Physiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before rejoining the Department of Horticulture at UW-Madison, she worked as an Assistant Professor at the Kimberly Research Extension Center, University of Idaho.
