Yvan Rose is a phonologist at Memorial University of Newfoundland specializing in language acquisition and the organization of sound systems in languages. His research focuses on how human beings store and organize sound systems and how language learners acquire the ability to produce sounds and sound combinations in speech. He employs a strong empirical and multidisciplinary approach in his research. Additionally, he has a secondary interest in loanword phonology, which involves studying how phonological systems react to sounds and combinations found in borrowed words from foreign languages. As part of an international consortium, he contributes to building a publicly available database that documents phonological development and speech disorders across languages. This database, known as PhonBank, is part of the CHILDES project. In this project, Yvan is also leading the development of open-source software for the elaboration and compilation of phonological data corpora.
