Biography

Yvonne Lam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta. She holds a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on multilingual practices, including indigenous languages, heritage languages, and foreign languages. Dr. Lam adopts an interdisciplinary approach to study the factors influencing multilingual speakers, with a particular emphasis on language ideologies and sense of identity. Her work aims to help multilingual speakers feel comfortable using their full linguistic repertoire, specializing in projects that involve general groups and indigenous communities in Mexico, notably the Totonac community, as well as heritage language communities in Canada. In addition to her research, she teaches a variety of undergraduate courses in Spanish language and linguistics, as well as graduate courses in general linguistics, and has supervised numerous MA and PhD students on topics related to language acquisition and sociolinguistics. She has been recognized for her mentoring, receiving the Faculty of Arts Undergraduate Researcher Award for guiding multiple undergraduate honours students.
