Biography

Professor Zoe Kourtzi's work aims to understand the role of learning and experience in enabling humans of all ages to translate sensory experiences into complex decisions and adaptive behaviors. Her research focuses on adaptive cognitive abilities critical for survival and social interactions, as well as extracting meaning from complex and ambiguous inputs from the natural world. This computationally demanding task is far from fully understood. To address this challenge, she employs an interdisciplinary approach that combines behavioral paradigms and multimodal brain imaging techniques such as MRI, EEG, MEG, and TMS with state-of-the-art computational methods. Professor Kourtzi applies these techniques to study both the young and aging brain, aiming to understand learning and cortical plasticity across the lifespan. Her research interests include learning, brain plasticity, visual perception, cognition, cognitive aging, brain imaging, and computational neuroscience.
