Biography

Connie Mayer is a Professor at York University in the Faculty of Education, where she also serves as the Academic Coordinator for the Teacher Preparation Program. Her work focuses on language and literacy development for Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) learners, emphasizing early literacy and intervention strategies. Mayer has made significant contributions to academic journals as an Associate Editor for Volta Review and as a member of the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education and the American Annals of the Deaf. She received the Sister Mary Delaney Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in 2016, recognizing her extensive work in research and teacher preparation for DHH students. In 2018, Mayer was honored with an Honorary Professorship from the University of Manchester's Division of Human Communication, Development, and Hearing. Currently, she is engaged in SSHRC funded research projects that seek to enhance the evidence base regarding literacy outcomes for Deaf learners, exploring theories of mind in relation to written language. Her academic interests cover a variety of topics, including bilingual education models for literacy, cochlear implantation in Deaf education, and the development of signed language literacy.
