Biography

Abby Allen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She earned her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Missouri in 2016. Her research focuses on early writing assessment interventions and curriculum-based measurement of written language. Allen has developed a sentence writing intervention aimed at elementary students at risk for learning disabilities, supported by the Early Career Research Mentoring Grant from the Institute of Educational Sciences. Previously, she worked as a speech-language pathologist in the Special School District of St. Louis County, where she gained invaluable experience in addressing the needs of students with significant intellectual and physical disabilities. Abby is passionate about teaching future educators and has developed a course on Alternative Augmentative Communication Literacy, which discusses assessment and intervention strategies related to AAC development and beginning literacy skills.
