Dr. Acrisio Pires

Biography

Acrisio Pires is a Professor and the Department Chair at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. His teaching and research focus on linguistic theory, specifically within the frameworks of Minimalism and comparative syntax. He has significant contributions to the fields of syntax, language acquisition, bilingualism, and language contact. Professor Pires has chaired or co-chaired 18 Ph.D. dissertations, guiding work on syntactic theory and bilingualism, and has advised numerous undergraduate honors students in linguistic theory. His linguistic research covers a diverse array of languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese. He is actively involved in education and mentorship within the field, preparing students for careers in linguistics. Professor Pires is recognized for his research on the syntax-morphosyntax interface and has a strong interest in the interactions between language acquisition and linguistic change.
