Biography

Aiko Ikemura Amaral joined the Department of International Development at King’s College London in 2022. Her research focuses on the politicization of urbanization and indigeneity in Bolivia, examining personal narratives of women who work in street markets and the everyday dimensions of broader development issues affecting urban contexts in Latin America. Aiko is affiliated with King’s Brazil Institute, holding a PhD in Sociology from the University of Essex and an MSc in Politics from the University of São Paulo. She has served as a Visiting Fellow at the Latin America Caribbean Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science and as a Teaching Associate at the Centre of Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge. Aiko employs a qualitative participatory research approach to explore intersectional identities and inequalities in Latin America, focusing on themes such as urban food security, social spatial mobility, and informal work. She welcomes PhD proposals in areas related to qualitative approaches, mobilities, migration, and urban social movements.
