Alice H.D. Chan investigates how people learn to use language in early childhood. Her research employs behavioral experiments and brain imaging to explore the cognitive and neural mechanisms supporting bilingualism, biliteracy, and language learning, as well as speech perception. She has led multiple nationally funded projects, including those awarded by the Ministry of Education's AcRF Tier-2 on topics surrounding ageing and early literacy. Additionally, she has contributed to the Social Science Research Council Thematic Grant focusing on early biliteracy and language shift, as well as the Science Learning project which examines the mechanisms supporting the development of bilinguals' non-dominant language. Prior to her current role at the University of Warwick, Dr. Chan served as Head of Linguistics & Multilingual Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and was the Founding Programme Director of the MA in Linguistics. She actively encourages inquiries from prospective PhD and MSc students interested in bilingualism, second-language learning, ageing cognition, and lifespan development. Dr. Chan's selected funded research projects include studies on language, learning, and living in middle adulthood, bilingual metalinguistic scaffolding, and predicting reading disabilities, among others.
