Biography

Amy Claessens holds the Gulbrandsen Distinguished Chair in Early Childhood Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a professor, she serves as the associate director of the Center for Research on Early Childhood Education (CRECE). Claessens earned her doctorate in Human Development and Social Policy from Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy in 2007, following an MA in the same field in 2006 and a BS in Social Policy in 1998. Her research focuses on understanding how policies and programs influence young children’s developmental opportunities for learning. She plays a significant role in the Development and Research in Early Math Education (DREME) network, which aims to enhance mathematical learning opportunities for young children at home and in schools. Claessens leads a partnership with the Department of Children and Families in Wisconsin to study changes in childcare supply. She has secured funding from various sources, including the Administration for Children and Families and the W.T. Grant Foundation.
