Biography

Andrew Howes began his academic career as a civil engineer, earning an MA in Engineering from Cambridge University and working with British Rail. He transitioned to teaching after completing his PGCE at Oxford University, where he focused on science education in underprivileged areas in the UK and Indonesia. Howes has dedicated years to teacher education and research; as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Manchester, he specializes in science education, particularly in inclusive practices and STEM education. His research interests lie in the development of science teachers and the integration of inquiry-based learning in the curriculum. Howes has been involved in multiple international educational projects, contributing to significant advancements in STEM education and inclusive practices. He has supervised numerous PhD students and remains engaged in developing future science educators. His work emphasizes creating connections between science and everyday life, aiming to enhance student engagement in environmental sustainability and challenging issues. He maintains an active role in professional development and continues to influence educational practices both locally and internationally.
