Carol graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1988 with a degree in Biochemistry and followed that with a PhD in DNA methylation Virology from the University of Glasgow in 1992. She went on to obtain a qualification in education (PGCE) at the University of Strathclyde and spent three years teaching Chemistry and Biology at Stewart's Melville College in Edinburgh. In 1996, she returned to the University of Glasgow as part of the team that developed and delivered the innovative new problem-based learning (PBL) undergraduate medical curriculum, which earned the team the University of Glasgow Teaching Excellence award. In addition to PBL, her area of interest includes assessment, and she undertook research on student perceptions of assessment feedback for her M.Ed. in academic practice in 2007. Carol currently serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Medical School, acting as Head of Assessment for the MBChB course and chairing the MBChB Assessment Committee. She is also a representative in the Medical Schools Council Assessment Alliance (MSC-AA) and holds the title of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
