Biography

Carol Smith is a Bicentennial Education Fellow at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh. With a strong background in Primary Education, she graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Education and has spent 24 years in various teaching and management roles across Scottish primary schools, focusing primarily on children from Nursery to P7. In 2008, she was seconded to support Probationer teachers during their Induction year. Following this, Carol joined the tutor team at Stirling University to develop a new Initial Teacher Education Primary Education programme, where she later took on responsibilities for students specializing in early years education. Her current research interests include early years education, active play-based approaches to learning, the design of school spaces, children's agency and choice, and peer friendships. Carol completed her Doctorate in Education at the University of Edinburgh in 2023, focusing her research on children’s perspectives as they begin compulsory education in Scotland, utilizing an ethnographic approach to gain in-depth insights into their experiences.
