Biography

Cati V. de los Ríos is an Associate Professor in the Berkeley School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research applies critical, sociocultural, and translingual theories to examine literacy and language practices among immigrant bi/multilingual youth populations. She engages in ethnographic, community-based, participatory research situated in literacy studies, educational anthropology, civic political learning, and ethnic studies. Her work focuses on how Latina/o/x youth and their families engage and develop linguistic-semiotic repertoires in educational settings. De los Ríos' empirical studies investigate secondary teachers' critical translingual pedagogies in Ethnic Studies classrooms, the cultural creative expressivity of bi/multilingual youth in Mexican Regional Music, and Latinx family-youth community engagement. Her scholarship highlights the diverse resources that racialized bi/multilingual youth leverage to engage intellectually and socially within educational contexts and has been published in several notable academic journals. In addition to her research accomplishments, she has received numerous awards recognizing her contributions to educational research and practice in the area of language and literacy education.
