Biography

Chyi Chung is a Professor of Instruction in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University. Originally from Taiwan, Chyi has lived in Honduras and Chicago for 30 years. Chyi holds an M.S. in Hispanic Studies from Tamkang University in Taiwan and an M.A. in Spanish Language Literature from Loyola University Chicago. Since joining Northwestern in 1997, Chyi has taught undergraduate courses in Spanish and Chinese, as well as graduate-level courses focused on pedagogy and methodology. Chyi has received numerous awards and honors, including the Tamkang University Distinguished Alumni Award and the Northwestern Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Award. Chyi has also been recognized on the Faculty Honor Roll by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Additionally, Chyi holds several teaching certifications, including the Assessment of Performance Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) and certifications from the Center for International Foreign Language Teacher Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Chyi's pedagogical research and curricular initiatives have been supported by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Northwestern University Office of International Relations. Chyi currently serves as the Director of the Middle East North African Languages Program at Northwestern and has previously directed the Spanish Language Program from 2014 to 2020. Chyi is also actively involved as Treasurer of the Council on Language Instruction and volunteers as a docent at the Cyrus Tang Hall of China at the Field Museum in Chicago.
