Dr. Colin Macleod

Biography

Colin MacLeod is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo, where he has excelled in the field of Cognitive Psychology. His research career has primarily focused on human cognition, particularly in the areas of attention, learning, and memory. His early work emphasized verbal learning and memory, with a particular interest in long-term memory structure and processes, especially the dynamics of intentional forgetting. Over time, MacLeod's focus broadened to include individual differences in cognition, examining how individuals differ in their linguistic and spatial skills and strategies. His ongoing research explores the basic processes involved in reading, automaticity, and the interplay between attention and memory. Additionally, he leads a lab that investigates phenomena such as the production effect, which suggests that saying things aloud aids memory retention, and contingency learning, where implicit associations with relevant and irrelevant information are developed.
