Biography

Colleen Matts serves as the Assistant Director of Strategy in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University. Previously, she directed the Great Lakes Midwest Regional Food Business Center, a USDA-funded project that promoted success for food farm businesses across the Midwest. Colleen has been influential in developing local food purchasing programs for institutions, such as schools and hospitals, through her role with CRFS. She played a significant part in the Michigan Farm Institution Network and led the Cultivate Michigan campaign. Colleen has also been part of various initiatives, including the Lake Michigan School Food System Innovation Hub, where she helped reimagine school meals in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. She holds a Master’s degree in Agriculture, Food, and Environment with a specialization in community development from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, and she completed an associate degree in Applied Science in Culinary Hospitality Management from Washtenaw Community College in 2019.
