Professor Dr. Denise Osborne

Biography

Denise M. Osborne is a senior lecturer in the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell University, specializing in Portuguese language education. She earned her Ph.D. in Language Acquisition and Teaching from the University of Arizona and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her primary research interests revolve around language acquisition, focusing on phonetics, perception, and the learning of Portuguese as a foreign language. She investigates how both linguistic and non-linguistic factors influence the acquisition and engagement of learners, including language attitudes and ethnic identities. Denise also leads several collaborative teaching projects aimed at enhancing the learning experience of Portuguese students, utilizing innovative approaches to promote cultural understanding and linguistic proficiency. She remains active in public engagement initiatives, including workshops that address themes of identity and representation through literature.
