Biography

Doris Johnson is a pioneer in the study of learning disabilities, collaborating with colleague Helmer R. Myklebust. Together, they authored 'Learning Disabilities: Educational Principles and Practice,' a landmark book that became a foundational text for understanding the challenges faced by otherwise healthy children in processing information. Her research emphasizes the importance of symbols in the learning process and addresses the challenges that affect an individual’s ability to understand and use various types of information. For nineteen years, Johnson directed Northwestern University’s Learning Disabilities Program and served as the executive director of the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities. She remains actively involved with the Learning Disabilities Association of America and is engaged as a committed teacher. Currently, she serves on the advisory board of the Association of Educational Therapists and is working on an early literacy project with graduate students from Chicago Public Schools.
