Biography

Ellen Boeren joined the University of Glasgow on July 1, 2019, after working at the University of Edinburgh for 7 years and 2 months. She holds a PhD in Educational Sciences from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Currently, she is leading a £605k FEC ESRC Standard Grant project focusing on the state-of-the-art use of adult learning education statistics in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Boeren is recognized as the champion of the College of Social Sciences rankings, where she analyzes data that feed into international domestic league tables to inform subject strategies. She specializes in adult education and lifelong learning, with considerable experience in large international organizations. Boeren undertook the prestigious Thomas J. Alexander Fellowship at OECD and co-edited the Fourth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education for the UNESCO Institute of Lifelong Learning. She has been a consultant for the European Commission and led the Scottish team for the €2.5 million Horizon 2020 project ENLIVEN, which aims to encourage lifelong learning for an inclusive and vibrant Europe. Her publications include the monograph 'Lifelong Learning Participation in a Changing Policy Context: Interdisciplinary Theory,' which won the 2017 Cyril O. Houle Award for Outstanding Contribution to Adult Education Literature. She served as Chair of the Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults from 2014 to 2017 and was editor of the high-profile journal 'Adult Education Quarterly' from 2019 to 2022.
