Biography

Elsa Belmont Flores grew up in Mexico City and has lived in Wales, Egypt, and Jordan. She joined Brown University in 2018 as an Assistant Teaching Professor in Language Studies, where she teaches beginning and advanced-level courses in Modern Standard Arabic and Levantine Colloquial Arabic. Concurrently, Elsa serves as the Assistant Director of the Center for Language Studies, collaborating with faculty and students across departments to enhance the teaching and learning of languages, with a special focus on undergraduate programming for the Certificate in Intercultural Competence. Before her role at Brown University, Elsa was the Assistant Director and Resident Coordinator at the Middlebury School in Jordan, where she worked collaboratively with faculty and community members to achieve the program’s goals in curricular development and student immersion. Her teaching and research interests encompass youth culture in the Arab World, media and film, critical pedagogy, and the use of technology in teaching Arabic.
