Biography

Gavin Renwick holds a PhD from the University of Dundee, where his research focused on architecture, design, and fine art curation. With over 20 years of experience in academia, Gavin's undergraduate study was in Interior Design at Napier College, Edinburgh, and he obtained his Master's degree at the Royal College of Art, London, supported by the prestigious Darwin Scholarship. His doctoral thesis titled 'Spatial Determination of the Canadian North: Theoretical Overview and Practice-Based Response' established him as a significant figure in practice-led research. After completing his doctorate, Gavin secured a fellowship with the UK's Arts & Humanities Research Board in Creative Performing Arts. In 2005, he was appointed as Professor and Chair of Art and Policy at Duncan Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee, and in 2010 joined the University of Alberta. His current work emphasizes the role of art and design as a cultural intermediary, advocating for cultural continuity among Indigenous communities, particularly in the Canadian Northwest Territories.
