Biography

George Georgiou is a Full Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on learning disabilities, literacy acquisition, and cognitive processes related to reading. Georgiou completed his bachelor's degree in education at the University of Cyprus in 2000, followed by a master's degree and PhD in educational psychology at the University of Alberta in 2004 and 2008, respectively. After earning his PhD, he worked as a research associate at the Ministry of Education and Culture in Cyprus before taking on a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. Back at the University of Alberta, he has progressed from Associate Professor to Full Professor, also serving as the Associate Dean of International Initiatives. He is the director of the J. P. Das Centre for Developmental Learning Disabilities and has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Martha Cook Piper Research Award and the Killam Professorship. His courses include both undergraduate and graduate level classes focusing on assessment programming for children with reading difficulties and advanced seminars in learning disabilities. Georgiou is known for his extensive research publications and active supervision of undergraduate research projects.
