Dr. Gerald Campano

Biography

Gerald Campano is a Professor at the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania, focusing on Learning, Teaching, and Literacies. With proud cultural roots from the Mindanao region of the Philippines, Gerald has led the Learning, Teaching, and Literacies Division for nine years and has nearly a decade of experience as a public-school teacher, recognized multiple times as district teacher of the year and as a Carnegie Scholar. His scholarly interests encompass elementary literacy teaching, critical ethnic studies, immigrant education, and practitioner participatory research. Throughout his academic career, Gerald has advocated for community-based inquiry methodologies grounded in ethics of care and interdependence. He has directed 35 dissertations and has received numerous accolades for his contributions to literacy education and research, including the David H. Russell Award for his book on immigrant students' literacy and recent co-authored works on community partnerships in education. Gerald is also an active member of various educational councils and has produced notable publications on the intersection of literacy and social justice.
