Hector Vazquez-Cordoba is an Assistant Teaching Professor in Indigenous Education and Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Victoria. Originally from Naolinco, Mexico, he completed his PhD in Educational Studies at the University of Victoria. His research interests include Indigenous ways of knowing, music education, decolonizing and indigenizing music education, Indigenous methodologies, educational policy, and epistemologies related to Indigenous cultures. Dr. Vazquez-Cordoba's doctoral research focused on embedding Indigenous roots within Mexico’s national elementary curriculum, supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowship. He continued his postdoctoral research, collaborating with teacher candidates and Indigenous culture bearers in the Coast Salish Territory of Canada and the Huasteca region of Mexico, supported by a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship and the ISME-SEMPRE Music Education Research Grant. Dr. Vazquez-Cordoba is passionate about fostering educational practices that respect and integrate Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
