Biography

Heeyeong Jung is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Korean Language Program within the Department of East Asian Studies at Brown University. She received her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literatures, specializing in Korean Linguistics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and her M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Oregon. Before joining Brown, she taught Korean at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2019 to 2022 and at Harvard University from 2012 to 2020. Additionally, she has experience teaching at Middlebury Language Schools during the summer of 2016. Her academic interests center on teaching Korean as a foreign language, particularly focusing on Korean pedagogy, instructional technology, Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA), and heritage learning issues. She is specifically interested in how languages are used in different social contexts and how speakers unconsciously employ linguistic items that convey social meanings and identity. Currently, she is a certified ACTFL Korean Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester and an ACTFL Assessment Performance Proficiency Languages (AAPPL) rater.
