Biography

Prior to joining King’s College London, Helen Murray was a Research Fellow at the Political Economy Education Research Network (PEER) at the University of Sussex. Before moving into academia, she worked for 10 years in policy and advocacy research roles focusing on education justice, conflict, and international development. Helen has collaborated with various universities, civil society organizations, and international development agencies across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Central Asia. Her research interests encompass critical historical perspectives on education, with a particular focus on the challenges facing higher education in conflict and crisis situations. She is especially interested in what constitutes 'public' education within wider struggles for democracy. Her ESRC-funded PhD research examined the historical relationship between national universities in Lebanon and the public sphere during times of conflict. Additionally, Helen is committed to teaching and currently delivers modules on Critical Perspectives of Education, International Development, and Research Methods Dissertation at the MA Education sessions.
