Biography

Henk Schmidt is a professor of Psychology at Erasmus University Rotterdam and the founding dean of the problem-based psychology curriculum. He served as Rector Magnificus from September 2009 to November 2013. His previous roles include professor of cognitive psychology at Maastricht University and professor of health professions education. Schmidt has held significant administrative positions, including deanships at Erasmus University and Maastricht University. He has been involved with various educational and psychological associations and has contributed to numerous international programs. Schmidt's research focuses on learning and memory, particularly in problem-based learning, long-term memory, and the development of expertise in medicine. He has published over 250 articles and is known for mentoring more than 30 PhD students. He has received multiple accolades, including an honorary degree from Université de Sherbrooke and the international medical education research prize from Karolinska Institutet. In 2006, he was awarded the Distinguished Career Award by the American Educational Research Association. In 2005, he was recognized as one of the top 200 Dutch scientists by KNAW.
