Biography

Huamei Han is an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University in the Faculty of Education. Her research interests lie at the intersection of Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Anthropology, Education, and Globalization Studies, particularly focusing on language learning and multilingualism among linguistically marginalized individuals. Han's past projects have examined language learning among adult immigrants in Eastern Canada and multilingual practices within youth and minority churches in Western Canada. In 2009, she began conducting fieldwork primarily in Southern Africa, exploring grassroots multilingualism within the context of China-Africa trade and migration. She is currently involved in a multi-year, multi-site collaborative project that investigates social inclusion and exclusion dynamics within Chinese communities in Canada, beginning in 2014.
