Biography

Hyman Bass is a distinguished professor at the University of Michigan's Marsal Family School of Education and holds the Samuel Eilenberg Distinguished University Professorship in the Department of Mathematics. He received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1959. Since joining the University of Michigan in 1999, he has focused his research on mathematics education, particularly the practice-based theory of mathematical knowledge for teaching and its implications for teacher education and curriculum development. His work aims to address issues of inequitable access to STEM education. Bass is also involved in actively investigating the teaching and learning of mathematical practices. He has designed innovative instructional opportunities and developed a capstone course for teacher preparation. Additionally, he is the past president of the American Mathematical Society and a member of several prestigious academies, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. In 2012, he was awarded the U.S. National Medal of Science for his contributions to mathematics education.
