Biography

Jan MacLean is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. Their research focuses on art literacy, inclusive education, and social change through art in school community settings. MacLean's current study, titled "Encouraging Empathy Through the Arts," aims to investigate how active engagement in the arts, coupled with reflective practice, can support students’ mental, emotional, and physical health. It encourages a stronger sense of belonging and compassionate connection among students participating in art activities such as visual arts, drama, movement, and music. The project has developed as a response to the significant rise in anxiety and depression among young people, with a core focus on learning about neurodiversity and its relation to brain health.
