Biography

Jeannette Schaeffer is a linguist specializing in language acquisition with a focus on both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals, including children, teenagers, and adults. She earned her Master's degree from Utrecht University in 1990 and her PhD from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1997, followed by a postdoctoral position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. From 1998 to 2011, she held positions as Assistant and Associate Professor at Ben Gurion University in Israel before joining the University of Amsterdam in 2011. Her research interests encompass the study of language acquisition among typically developing monolingual children in various languages, multilingualism, and language disorders, particularly Developmental Language Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Schaeffer investigates grammatical phenomena such as object scrambling, clitic placement, Wh-movement, and subject-verb agreement, using behavioral experimental techniques and methods including eye-tracking and brain imaging. She is actively involved in projects aimed at understanding the intersection of language, brain, and genetics in relation to Autism, and contributes to networks focused on language abilities in children with Autism.
