Biography

Jessica Barudin is an Assistant Professor specializing in Indigenous Community Planning at the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), University of British Columbia (UBC). As a member of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation and an elected leader of the ‘Namgis Nation, she is dedicated to a values-driven and relationship-centered approach to community planning. Jessica's research focuses on enhancing community-led processes within Indigenous communities, particularly through language revitalization and holistic wellness practices. She is a mother, a Kwak’wala language learner, and a community wellness practitioner, committed to integrating traditional teachings into modern contexts. Jessica completed her PhD in Individualized Studies at Concordia University, with a dissertation that examines culturally-responsive, trauma-informed wellness programs for women in Kwakwaka’wakw Nations. In addition to her academic work, she has produced a documentary film on community wellness and has been involved in numerous programs that promote yoga and wellness centered around Indigenous cultural practices. Jessica's research interests include Indigenous health and well-being, community governance, and the empowerment of women as leaders in planning processes, particularly in relation to land stewardship and cultural transmission.
