Jolie C. Matthews studies the sociotechnological and sociocultural dimensions of cognition and the ways in which media, popular culture, and digital forces influence people’s beliefs about events, individuals, and groups in the past and present. Her work focuses on learning contexts and encompasses themes such as media and digital literacy, historical consciousness, the representation of individuals and groups in digital spaces, dominant narratives, source credibility, metacognition, and bias. She received her PhD in Learning Sciences and Technology Design from Stanford University, where she worked as a research assistant at the Stanford University Joint Media Engagement Group. Her research has been supported by the Wallenberg Media Places Grant and she has been involved with YouthLAB. Matthews is an alumnus of New York University, where she earned her BA from the Gallatin School, concentrating on Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies, and received a Master of Professional Writing from the University of Southern California with a focus on fiction and screenwriting. She has also completed a PhD Research Internship at Microsoft’s Collective.
