Biography

Karen Bulmer is a versatile tuba player, educator, and writer actively engaged as a tuba soloist and improviser. She has performed an original one-woman show, 'Girl Meets Tuba', which chronicles her on-again off-again relationship with the tuba at various venues across Canada. Bulmer's radio piece, 'Joined Lip', aired on CBC’s Outfront in 2001 and has been featured in radio festivals worldwide, including the Copenhagen Radio Cinema. She presented at the annual inter-disciplinary ideaCity conference in Toronto and has performed alongside the finest classical, folk, and pop artists in Newfoundland. In recent years, her research interests have expanded to include the exploration of mind-body practices that are particularly relevant to musicians. She developed the unique Mind/Body Tools for Musicians program, which combines mindfulness and movement with self-regulation strategies to help musicians access a greater sense of innate expression, presence, and resilience. Additionally, she hosts the 'Music, Mind, Movement Podcast', which explores holistic approaches to music training and performance through in-depth conversations with educators, health professionals, and somatic practitioners.
