Biography

Professor Kate Borthwick serves as the Director of Open Online Courses at the University of Southampton, leading initiatives in digital education and blended learning. She lectures on digitally-mediated teaching and learning in Modern Languages and Linguistics, and currently chairs the Generative Artificial Intelligence working group, focusing on the development of policy and practice surrounding generative AI tools in education. With a strong passion for open educational practices, she has utilized participatory action research to explore inclusive education and has significantly contributed to the creation of open educational resources such as LanguageBox and HumBox. A recognized expert in her field, Borthwick has received several awards, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Internationalization in 2016, the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Innovation in Teaching in 2018, and the Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) in 2021. With a linguistics degree from St Andrews University and a Master’s in Applied Linguistics from Newcastle University, she has experience teaching and developing language courses internationally across China, Japan, and Russia. Borthwick continues to participate actively in conferences, serving as a keynote speaker and a member of editorial boards for several journals. Her research interests include artificial intelligence in education, massive open online courses (MOOCs), and inclusive design in educational settings.
