Biography

Katia Viot-Southard is an Associate Professor in the Department of French and Italian at Northwestern University. She holds a PhD in French Language Literature from Washington University in St. Louis. Her dissertation, titled 'Représentations de la condition féminine à la fin du XIXe siècle: Les ambivalences du théâtre au féminin,' offers close readings of plays by women writers in 19th-century France. Katia has presented conference papers and written articles focusing on women in theater. Currently, she coordinates the Intermediate French level sequence (French 121) and teaches Advanced French Grammar (French 301) while developing authentic resources that focus on current issues and debates in France. She also created a new Intermediate course entitled 'Acting French' (French 204), which uses performance as a means to improve students' language skills. Her research interests include foreign language pedagogy and methodology. Katia is an active member of the Council on Language Instruction (CLI) at Northwestern and serves as a faculty fellow at the International Studies Residential College (ISRC).
