Biography

Krista Byers-Heinlein is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Concordia University. She specializes in infants' language acquisition and bilingualism and holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia. Her research investigates infant development, focusing on language acquisition using behavioral methods such as eye tracking and looking-time measures. She is particularly interested in how infants in bilingual environments acquire languages simultaneously. Current projects involve comparisons of speech perception and word learning between monolingual and bilingual infants. Additionally, she explores the impact of bilingual parenting and language strategies on children’s language learning and identifies key factors that may indicate risks for bilingual children regarding language impairment or delay. Byers-Heinlein is committed to open science and large-scale collaborations and welcomes inquiries from prospective MA and PhD students interested in bilingualism. She teaches several courses, including Research Methods II, Infancy, Lifespan Development, and a graduate seminar on bilingualism.
