Dr. Laura Jiménez

Biography

Laura M. Jiménez is a Senior Lecturer and the Director of the Center for Educating Critically at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development. Her scholarship emphasizes the intersection of language and literacy education, particularly the representation of marginalized communities in children’s and young adult literature. With extensive experience in teaching, she explores how educators can create anti-oppressive, justice-oriented classroom environments. Previously, she served as associate dean of equity, diversity, and inclusion at Boston University. Jiménez is a founding member of the editorial board for Research on Diversity in Youth Literature and has been involved in various research initiatives focusing on diverse representations in graphic novels and multimodal literature. Her work has been published in multiple journals and media outlets, including the Journal of Literacy Research and the Boston Globe, and she has contributed to influential reports on diversity in publishing. Recent projects include developing frameworks to help teachers understand graphic novels and the engagement of middle school students in literature.
