Dr. Luisa Canuto

Biography

Luisa Canuto is an Assistant Professor in the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she has been teaching language courses since 1994. She founded the Italian Program at UBC Continuing Studies and developed the curriculum for the program. In 2000, she was awarded the Killam Prize for excellence in teaching. Luisa has also served as a Faculty Associate Manager at the Centre for Teaching and Academic Growth (CTLT), where she developed educational programs for faculty members, including orientation events and the Academic Leadership Development Program for new UBC Academic Leaders. She holds a PhD focusing on Service Learning in language acquisition and teaches Italian language and culture courses. Her research interests include the use of educational technologies in the classroom and the impact of service learning on students' linguistic and metacognitive development, as well as curriculum program renewal. Luisa’s graduate degrees reflect her diverse passions and interests, including Italian Venetian Medieval and Renaissance history, journalism, and educational theories and practices. As of July 2017, she is also serving as the Peer Review Teaching program coordinator and co-coordinator of the UBC Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Community of Practice.
