Originally from Spain, María holds a B.A. in Translation and Interpretation from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and a B.A. in Advertising and Public Relations from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She earned her M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics and completed her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Georgia (UGA), where her dissertation research focused on Language Acquisition and Language Variation. María’s research explores areas such as language acquisition, linguistic variation, and pedagogy in the context of the Spanish language. She has also examined implicit attitudes towards gender-inclusive language and the historical and contemporary evolution of discourse markers like 'pues', as well as the treatment of prepositions such as 'por' and 'para' in Spanish textbooks. María has been engaged in projects promoting inclusive teaching practices that connect linguistic research with innovative and socially conscious pedagogy. Her research has been supported by the Wilson Center Travel Grant for fieldwork in Buenos Aires, and she received the Sigma Delta Pi Award for her research in Mexico City. In Spring 2025, five of her graduate students will receive UGA’s prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award, recognizing their outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.
