Dr. Marie Mccarthy

Biography

Marie McCarthy is a music educator focused on research interests that explore the influence of sociocultural contexts on music teaching and learning, as well as historical contexts. Her published work covers topics such as music education formation and cultural identity, historical narratives in music transmission within African American schools and communities, and the history of Irish traditional music transmission. Additionally, her interests extend to children's spiritual development. McCarthy has been a faculty member at the University of Michigan since 2006 and previously taught at the University of Maryland for sixteen years. She also has extensive experience as a primary-school teacher in Ireland for ten years. Throughout her career, she has taught various courses related to music education, including learning theories, music cultures in the classroom, and both basic and advanced research methods in music education. Notably, McCarthy has received several awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Council for Research in Music Education. She holds honorary life membership in the Society for Music Education in Ireland and the International Society for Music Education, and was the recipient of the 2022 Senior Researcher Award from the National Association for Music Education. Her major publications include books like 'Passing on the Transmission of Music in Irish Culture' and 'Global Community: The History of the International Society for Music Education, 1953-2003'. Recently, she co-edited a significant book titled 'Micheál Ó Súilleabháin: Life in Music' (2024). McCarthy has been an influential speaker and has served in various professional roles, including editor for the State-of-the-Arts Series at the University of Maryland and member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Research in Music Education.
