Mark Lipton is a Professor in the School of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph. He teaches in the Media Studies program at the University of Guelph-Humber and currently supports the Environment Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in pedagogical training. Lipton has designed a professional development program for 2000 scientists in science communication. His work strikes a balance between theory and practice, employing alternative pedagogical models and multidisciplinary perspectives. He has experience teaching at the middle and secondary school levels, serving as a teacher/educator supervisor, and working as a curricula specialist in communication, media, curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessment. Lipton is an advocate for media literacy and collaborates with current media technology to support Ontario public school teachers. Previously, he directed the Media Ecology program at New York University, served as a resource site advisor for New York City public school teachers, and taught at Harvey Milk High School in New York City. Lipton has held a Mellon Fellowship in Digital Humanities and Visual Literacy at Vassar College, and was a recipient of a Ford Foundation grant. He has worked as the education director for the Children’s Media Project, a non-profit organization, leading a team in designing health promotion media literacy workshops. His research interests include education, alternative ways of knowing, learning and teaching; communication, media, popular/media cultures, science and technology, performance, improvisation, and media ecology.
