Markus Maurer studied Education, History, and Ethnology at the University of Zurich. He earned his diploma for maturity schools in Education and History in 2008 and completed his PhD in Vocational Education in 2011. He has taught at various school levels and has worked with the Institute of Education (IBE) of UNESCO in Geneva. From 2009 to 2012, Markus Maurer served as a senior assistant in the Chair of Vocational Education at the University of Zurich. He also held teaching positions at Humboldt University in Berlin (2004–2010) and ETH Zurich (2017–2024). He joined the Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich as a lecturer for vocational school teacher training in 2013 and has been a professor of vocational education since 2014. In addition to teaching and research, he advises authorities, schools, and international organizations and is the president of the federal vocational baccalaureate examination. Since 2014, he has been engaged in vocational education themes at PH Zurich. He has led several projects focusing on adult vocational education and the implementation of curriculum standards.
