Biography

Maximilian Luppold is a research associate in the Department of Empirical Research on Teaching and Schools at Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, where he is pursuing his doctorate under Professor Matthias Nückles. His research focuses on the project "FinFiFlu – Financial Education through Influencers?" which examines how young people engage with explanatory videos from financial influencers on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. His work emphasizes the analysis of typical comprehension difficulties and meta-cognitive and epistemic misconceptions that arise from this type of content, particularly how these challenges relate to features such as the presentation of authenticity, emotional narratives, and simplified arguments. Based on these findings, he evaluates the effectiveness of various interventions aimed at reducing these comprehension barriers and enhancing the students' capacity for content and epistemic reflection. Another major focus of his research involves assessing teachers' diagnostic competence in recognizing potential comprehension difficulties their students may face with digital explanatory videos. He develops and evaluates an evidence-based training program designed to improve this competence, intending to create an empirically grounded teaching/learning offering that empowers teachers in guiding students towards critical engagement with digital resources on financial education.
