Dr. Nancy Hertzog

Biography

Nancy Hertzog is a Professor at the University of Washington's College of Education, specializing in Learning Sciences and Human Development. With a rich background beginning with her Master's degree in Gifted Education from the University of Connecticut, Hertzog has dedicated her career to exploring curricular practices and policies within the field of gifted education. Since joining the University of Washington in 2010, she has also served as the Director of the Halbert Nancy Robinson Center for Young Scholars until 2020. Her research interests are focused on early childhood equity studies, qualitative research methods, and advanced learning opportunities in schools. Hertzog's work challenges traditional conceptions of gifted education, advocating for inclusive pedagogical strategies that accommodate diverse learners rather than simply labeling students as 'gifted'. She has published extensively on instructional practices and their impact on student engagement and achievement. Prior to her current role, Hertzog held various academic positions at the University of Illinois, where she directed the University Primary School and contributed significantly to the curriculum in special education. Her educational journey culminated in a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Illinois, where she originally investigated the nature of open-ended activities for her doctoral thesis.
