Dr. Pratim Sengupta

Biography

Pratim Sengupta is a Full Professor in the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary and holds a Research Chair in STEM Education. He completed his PhD in Learning Sciences from Northwestern University in 2009 after earning two Master’s degrees in Physics from Northwestern University and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Before joining the University of Calgary in 2015, he was a professor at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College, where he co-founded the Learning Sciences PhD program. His research focuses on developing agent-based programming languages that integrate computational modeling into K-12 science and mathematics classrooms. He has received numerous accolades, including the NSF CAREER Award in 2012 and the Paul D. Fleck Award from the Banff Center for Arts and Creativity. Sengupta's work emphasizes the intersections of education with complexity, computing, and social justice. He also collaborates with colleagues across disciplines and is involved in multiple projects that aim to enhance educational practices through technological innovation. His dedication to mentoring students is evident in his close collaboration with them on various research initiatives, particularly in the realm of public computing. Additionally, Sengupta has made significant contributions to understanding the social dynamics within educational contexts, often examining themes of race, intersectionality, and equity in learning environments.
