Dr. Ruth Wright

Biography

Ruth Wright is a Professor at the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University. She served as Chair of the Department of Music Education from 2009 to 2013 and was Assistant Dean of Research from 2013 to 2015. Prior to her tenure at Western, she was the Director of the Graduate Continuing Professional Development Framework in education at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. A dedicated educator, Wright has experience teaching high school music and maintains a private piano studio. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and earned her PhD in Education in 2006. Her research interests focus on the sociology of music education, popular music in education, and the inclusion and empowerment of marginalized students in music education. She co-launched Musical Futures Canada in 2012, a program addressing key issues within music education. Wright is an active speaker at national and international conferences and supervises doctoral students in the areas of sociology of music education and popular music pedagogy. Her publications include significant works in music education, further solidifying her role as a thought leader in the field.
