Dr. Sally Maitlis

Biography

Sally Maitlis is a Professor of Organisational Behaviour at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and a Fellow of the British Academy. She previously held a similar position at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia. Maitlis completed her PhD in Organisational Behaviour at the University of Sheffield and has a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology from Middlesex University. Her research focuses on how individuals navigate challenging work-related issues, including career disruptions due to identity crises or physical injuries and leaders coping with mental health challenges. She specializes in qualitative research, employing real-time observation of organizational processes. In 2023, Maitlis was recognized as a Distinguished Scholar by the Academy of Management’s Managerial Organizational Cognition Division. She engages extensively with practitioner audiences to relate current academic research on trauma, resilience, and meaning in work. Her contributions also appear in popular executive outlets, such as Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review. In addition to her academic work, she has held positions in advisory roles and coaching, enhancing her ability to approach complex organizational issues with empathy and depth.
