Dr. Scott Douglass

Biography

Scott G. Douglass is a lecturer in the Department of Music at Columbia University, where he teaches Music Education. He has extensive experience in music education, having taught in both public and private schools across New York City, Connecticut, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania. His career highlights include conducting performances with the DC Youth Orchestra at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center. Douglass's educational journey began with his graduate studies at Dartmouth College, followed by further studies in Music Education at New York University’s Steinhardt School. His PhD dissertation at Penn State, titled 'Commonwealth Jazz: Community History Jazz Musician Educators Agents Social Change Richmond, Virginia', focuses on the intersection of jazz studies, music education, and social change. He is committed to integrating music education within schools and fostering community musical traditions, as reflected in his ethnographic thesis on coastal southwest Madagascar.
